MOUNT WUTAIONE OF THE FOUR FAMOUS BUDDHIST MOUNTAINS

There are four famous Buddhist mountains in China, namely Mount Wutai in Shanxi, Mount Putuo in Zhejiang, Mount Emei in Sichuan, and Mount Jiuhua in Anhui. They are the ashram of Manjusri Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, and Tripitaka Bodhisattva.
Among them, Mount Wutai is known as "the first of the four famous Buddhist mountains". Since ancient times, there has been a saying of "Gold Wutai, Silver Putuo, Bronze Emei, and Iron Jiuhua". It can also be seen that Mount Wutai has an unusual position in the hearts of believers.

MOUNT WUTAI HAS A LONG HISTORY OF BUILDING TEMPLES

It is generally believed that the introduction of Buddhism into Mount Wutai began in the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the 11th year of Yongping, when Gaye Moteng and Zhu flange came to Mount Wutai, they saw that the mountain was magnificent and similar to the Indian Lingjiu Mountain. It is said that they also found the footprints of Buddha and the Buddhist "relics" recorded in the "Qingliang Mountain Annals". In addition, Mount Wutai was the place where Manjusri Bodhisattva practiced and lived, so they decided to build a temple here. Shortly after, the temple was completed and named Dafu Lingjiu Temple, which is the predecessor of today's Xiantong Temple. Since then, Mount Wutai has become the center of Chinese Buddhism, and temples of all sizes have been built here in all dynasties.

THE BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES CLEARLY RECORD MOUNT WUTAI

The "Living Quarters of All Bodhisattvas" in the "Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra" states: "There is a place in the northeast called Qingliang Mountain. Since ancient times, many Bodhisattvas have stopped in it. Currently, there are Bodhisattvas named Manjusri and Shili, and their families. There are ten thousand Bodhisattvas among them who often give speeches.
The "Manjusri Shili Treasure Dharani Sutra" records: "After I was destroyed, I arrived in the northeast of Shanbu Island. There was a country called Da Zhenna. In the middle of the country, there was a mountain named Wu Ding. Manjusri Shili was a young man who traveled and lived there. For all sentient beings, he spoke in the middle." Zhen Na, also known as Zhen Dan in ancient China, was also known as the Kingdom of Zhen Dan; There are five peaks: Mount Wutai. Therefore, Mount Wutai is also recognized as the ashram of Manjusri Bodhisattva all over the world.
In Buddhism, Manjusri Bodhisattva is a symbol of wisdom, so Mount Wutai has an important position in the Buddhist belief and is highly respected.
This is the record of Mount Wutai in the Buddhist scriptures, and it is also the only famous mountain with records among the four famous mountains, so it is famous at home and abroad.
